Castleton and South Cramahe Public Schools
In October 2007, the Board approved the establishment of a joint Board/community accommodation review committee to consider the futures of Castleton and South Cramahe Public Schools.
This committee held a number of public meetings through January to April to examine the student accommodation needs at the schools. At the end of the study, the review committee prepared a report that included a recommendation that the two schools be consolidated. While the committee was unable to reach consensus on a location for the new school, committee members indicated they would support a final decision by the Board for a new school within Cramahe township.
After reviewing three possible school sites: the current Castleton Public School site;
a greenfield site located at Purdy and Parliament Streets; and an additional greenfield site located in the area of County Road 25 and County Road 21 in Cramahe Township,
the Board of Trustees approved the current Castleton Public School site for the location of the new school.
Castleton and South Cramahe Public Schools were identified in the Board’s Capital Needs Assessment in Spring 2007 for a possible school review. School board administration has the responsibility to annually bring to the attention of Board Trustees schools which, for a number of reasons, may be reviewed for possible closure. KPR schools may be considered for review on the basis of a number of key criteria, including: Underutilization, Overcrowding, Program Viability, Physical Condition, Operating/Maintenance Costs, Individual or Group Accommodation Plan, or exceptional circumstances like fire, environmental or health hazards.

Newtonville Public School: Pupil Accommodation Review
At its May 29, 2008 Regular Board meeting, Trustees approved the closure of Newtonville Public School effective August 31,2008
After initially identifying the school for closure in its June 2007 Accommodation Review Report, at its August 30, 2007 meeting the Board approved the establishment of a joint Board/community accommodation review committee to consider the future of Newtonville PS.
This committee held a number of public meetings through November, December and February to examine the student accommodation needs at Newtonville PS At the end of that study the committee recommended closure of the school, with students being moved to Newcastle Public School.
In Spring 2007 administration discussed the continued status of multi-grade, combined classes with the parent community of Newtonville. At that time it was indicated that triple grades were planned to continue for the 2007-08 school year, and that parents would be allowed to send their children to Orono PS or Newcastle PS as an alternative. More than 50% of parents accepted this offer which resulted in the Newtonville PS site being made inactive for the 2007-08 school year.
