Gifted and Enriched Programming
Courses for high achieving and gifted students are offered at Kawartha Pine Ridge schools. These Gifted/Enriched courses go beyond the content included in the Ontario curriculum, offering students a more in-depth study of subjects. All elementary and secondary schools offer enrichment for students identified as gifted. In addition, there are elementary stand-alone gifted classes at Westmount P.S. in Peterborough, C.R. Gummow P.S. in Cobourg, and Dr. G.J. MacGillivray P.S. in Courtice.
The courses offered vary from school to school and include Model Parliament and Model United Nations programs, International Languages, Calculus, Music Theory and World History. Students will continue to be assessed under the Ontario Curriculum.
Through the Gifted/Enriched courses, students also work toward the opportunity to write an Advanced Placement (AP) exam. The AP program is interwoven with the Ontario Curriculum in the Gifted/Enriched courses. AP enrichment exposes students to university-level content and expectations, providing valuable experiences in preparation for universities in Canada, the U.S. or abroad. More information on the AP exam can be found at www.ap.ca
