Character Education
The Board has, through cooperation and collaboration with a wide cross-section of the community, developed a character education program for the school district. This program will stress, in a focused, systematic and intentional manner, the practice and application amongst our students and staff, of ten character attributes identified as the basis for the initiative.
These attributes include: Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, Integrity, Empathy, Fairness, Initiative, Perseverance, Courage, and Optimism. Each school engages in actions that support character development in their local area.
This school year, the Board has initiated a number of character-focused activities, including:
-
Encouraging the development and refinement of character in our students and employees
-
Forming new community partnerships
-
Partnering with local police to offer the Duke of Edinborough Awards in secondary schools through Youth Fusion
-
Increasing the number of Character Education celebrations, scholarships and awards
-
Increasing our employee contributions to United Way
-
Embedding character attributes in policy development
The Character Education program has been in place since January 2004.
